Elsenhans studied mathematics at Rice University and graduated there in 1978. After that, she studied economics at the Harvard Business School where she graduated in 1980. Elsenhans worked for 28 years with the Dutch-British company Royal Dutch Shell. From 2008, Elsenhans was Chairwoman, President and CEO of the US company Sunoco. According to Forbes magazine, Elsenhanns is one of the 100 most influential women in the world. Elsenhanns is married and lives in Philadelphia. In 2012, she left Sunoco as CEO and President.
