jurix was an early Linux distribution, mainly based on floppy disks, which is no longer developed today. It was created and maintained by Florian La Roche of the law department of the University of Saarbrücken and is provided with a copyright notice for at least the span from 1994 to 1996. At the end of this time, the four-level domains "jurix" and "susix" were used in the hierarchy "jura.uni-sb.de" for the communication and the first publication of the packed results.

The origin of the name jurix does not go back to La Roche but to Alexander Sigel, an employee of the same university. In 1994 he named the first Internet server of the department "jurix" - this already ran under Linux. There is no evidence as to whether this decision is somehow connected to the not-too-distant Dutch educational institution for law and information technology called JURIX or it is a simple summary of the terms "law" and "Unix" / "Linux ". Ultimately, it is proven that La Roche itself was given the official task of administrating this web platform in 1995.

A discussion about the history of Linux contained the words:

“Fabian (in fact meant: Florian La Roche) had previously been in the Debian project, but left due to the fighting. The initial version of JURIX were tarballs.”

"Fabian (meaning: Florian La Roche) was previously involved in the Debian project, but left it because of the disputes there. The original spreading form of JURIX was with the tool tar packed files. "

The most recent known and archived version of the distribution was the core of these applications:

The distribution had some additional features, including an installation program that was also capable of performing scripted installations, making a particular software set reproducible on relatively similar machines. Standards such as BOOTP or NFS have been supported. As the central file system for use, ext2 was integrated into the distribution as standard.

This package later formed the starting point for the initial version of the actual distribution SuSE Linux and its successors. In the further development of the development, the supervisor of jurix from the company SuSE also joined and was there for, Eg the installer and the configuration tool YaST written by him.
