San Joaquin Valley

The San Joaquin Valley is the area of the Central Valley of California that lies south of the San Joaquin River Delta in Stockton. Although most of the valley is rural, within its limits are important metropolitan areas. In its perimeter are the cities of Fresno, Bakersfield, Stockton, Modesto, Visalia, Porterville, Merced, Madera and Hanford. Geography San Joaquin Valley The San Joaquin Valley stretches from the San Joaquin and Sacramento delta to the north of the Tehachapi mountain range in the south and several California Coastal Sierras (from the Devil Mountain to the north to the Sierra del Tremblor in the south) to orest. To the east it borders with the Sierra Nevada. Unlike the Sacramento Valley, the aquifer system from which the San Joaquin Valley takes its name is not far from the valley. The older part of the valley south of Fresno drains Lake Tualare, which has ceased to exist. The main river of the valley is the San Joaquin, which drains northward, toward the northern half of the valley toward the delta of the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers. The Santos Reyes River and Kern River are located to the south of the valley endorheic basin, which has multiple uses in agriculture, so its courses are usually dry in their lower channels.
