ISO 639-5

ISO 639-5 is the fifth part of ISO 639 code that constitutes the international standards of language codes. It was published in 2008 and includes three-letter (alpha-3) codes for 114 language families and groups. The US Library of Congress is the registrar for this part of the policy.

ISO 639-5 includes and extends the "collectives" ISO 639-2 code group. Two types of these codes of ISO 639-2 are designated that also exist in ISO 639-5. Some mean "groups of languages" and have the same meaning in both norms. The others mean "groups of languages remaining" in ISO 639-2 but in ISO 639-5 mean whole groups. For example, in 639-2 the afa code (a "group of remaining languages") means only "Afro-Asian Languages (Other)", but in 639-5 it means all "Afro-Asian Languages".
