Universidad Heriot-Watt

The Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh (Scotland) is the eighth oldest university in the United Kingdom, named after George Heriot (financier of the 16th century) and James Watt (inventor and engineer of the 18th century). The university was created as an Edinburgh School of Art in 1821. Since 1869 women's access to this university was accepted, some 20 years earlier than in other institutions.

While its origins had only one campus located in the center of Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt currently has four campuses. The central campus is located in the Riccarton area (on the outskirts of Edinburgh). The remaining campuses are located in Galashiels in the Scottish Borders (formerly known as the Textile School of Scotland), Stromness in Orkney, in Dubai and more recently in Malaysia.

Heriot-Watt University has a total of 17,700 students (according to 2006/07 statistics), of whom 10,700 from 150 different countries study international programs, including the MBA program, and those students attending one of the 53 institutions with which Heriot-Watt has agreements around the world. The university has about 7,000 students on Scottish campuses, of which more than a quarter come from outside the UK; this international approach creates a very cosmopolitan environment in university life.

Heriot-Watt University stands out for its language courses (German, French and Spanish as well as English), business and information technology.
