Little is known about the life of Ulrich Helmasperger. He was a cleric in the bishopric of Bamberg, as well as a clerk and a notary in Mainz, with a legitimation derived from the emperor; as such he had been appointed Archbishop of Mainz. He is best known as the author of the so-called Helmaspergerchen Notariatsinstrument, which documents the legal dispute between Johannes Fust and Johannes Gutenberg in 1455. The document of 6 November 1455 is one of the most important sources of the biography of Gutenberg and the invention of the letterpress with movable letters. The notarial instrument, which is kept in the Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen, also contains the Signet signed by Helmsperger with a personal signature. Further documents are handed down by Helmsperger, among them a document of 21 June 1457, issued by him. It is also proved that in 1462, as a follower of Count Dieter von Isenburg, the papal legate imposed a ban on him. Further information on his life and work are controversial in research and are not clearly documented by sources.
