The book was created by the Kalligrafen Eprem in 1300 by order of Bishop Daniel for the church of Mokwi in western Georgia (Abkhazia). Eprem is also regarded in the scientific literature as the creator of the numerous miniatures. A full page miniature on the last page of the manuscript shows the kneeling client Bishop Daniel with the godmother.

Since the 1880s, the gospel has been kept in Gelati monastery. After Georgian occupation by the Red Army (1921), the Georgian historian and archaeologist, Ekwtime Taqaishvili, commissioned the Georgian exile government to bring the gospel of Mokwi to France, in addition to the other valuable pieces of the Georgian cultural heritage, to save it from looting by the occupying forces. It was not until 1945 that Taqaishvili could take the treasury back to Georgia. Today, the Gospel is preserved in the Georgian National Handicap Center Tbilisi under the signature Q 902. The gospel is richly decorated with miniatures and ornamental decor. There are a total of 531 initials and 152 square miniatures, which are integrated into the corresponding text. Gold leaf is used as a substrate and the colors are applied to the upper layer. This technique of painting is unique to medieval Georgian book art. The miniatures are badly damaged. Some studies have shown that the damage is mainly due to the unique technique of book painting. In the years 2010 to 2014, the gospel was repeatedly diagnosed and preserved. After the last conservation by the restorer of the Georgian National Handwriting Center and German specialist Andrea Pataki-Hundt, the Handschriftenzentrum officially declared that the long process of conservation was successfully completed in 2014.
