New Lazzaretto


Lazzaretto Nuovo is an island in the lagoon of Venice, in Italy of about 9 hectares. It is located at the entrance of the channel of San Erasmo. Benedictine monastery during the Middle Ages, the island became in 1468, by decree of the senator of the Serenissima, Lazareto Island, in the headquarters of an agency to prevent the spread of the pest, an institution that was subsequently exported to everything the world. The island served as a storage center for goods suspected of being infected by the pest in order to examine them on the ground.
