Margrave

Margrave is the name in Spanish given to the Germanic title Markgraf (of Mark, border, mark, and Graf, count), equivalent to marquess. The wife of a Margrave is called Margravine or Markgräfin in German. Equivalent to the title of marquess or marquise in Germany.

A Margrave originally had the function of military governor of a Carolingian marker, a border province in the Middle Ages. The margraves had jurisdiction over a mark (Mark, in German), which was called margraviato or marquesado. As the border provinces gained importance, they became greater than the interior ones, obtaining the margraves power over the other rulers of the kingdom.
