Gregory Escalante Nava


Gregorio Escalante Nava, Costa Rican politician (1811-1886). He married in the first nuptials in 1838 with Magadalena del Castillo Villagra, daughter of the wealthy coffee-grower Mariano Montealegre Bustamante and widow of Santiago Millet Saint-Jean, and secondly in 1865 with Filomena Echandi Marchena.

He was the administrator of the San José and Puntarenas customs, a judge of the first instance, Governor of the provinces of Puntarenas and Guanacaste, State Councilor, Deputy and administrator of the Issuance Bank.

He also served as a diplomat on two occasions. He was Charge d'Affaires of Costa Rica in Peru, where he signed the friendship treaty Escalante-Osma (1852), and in 1857 was sent as Minister to that same country, to manage a loan to meet the needs of the campaign against the filibusters of William Walker.
