Casein-Soja-Pepton-Agar

Colonies of Micrococcus luteus on CASO agar.

The casein soybean peptone agar is a nutrient medium for the cultivation of microorganisms.

The casein-soybean peptone agar or also casein-sojamehl peptone agar is found in the literature as CASO abbreviated. The variant as a liquid nutrient medium (without the addition of a gelling agent), for example the casein-soybean peptone broth, is also abbreviated by CASO. The nutrient medium is referred to in the English literature as Tryptic Soy Agar (TSA) or Soybean Casein Digest Agar (CSA), in the German literature there is usually tryptone soy agar. The medium essentially consists of casein peptone and soyamehl peptone. The proteins are degraded with trypsin, and peptones obtained in this way are also referred to as tryptones.

A large number of challenging bacteria grow in or on this medium. Therefore it is a standard medium for the detection of bacteria, but it is also used for the detection of mold fungi and yeasts. The cultivation of the microorganisms can take place both under aerobic and under anaerobic conditions. Typical fields of application are (ex) water testing and cosmetics. In some mixtures, cycloheximide is used to inhibit yeasts.

The medium is standardized both in the European and American Pharmacology. Single-level Edit source text
