Peter Clemenza


Peter Clemenza (July 16, 1890 - October 9, 1957) is a fictional character who appears in Mario Puzo's The Godfather novel, in its two sequels written by Mark Winegardner, in the prequel written by Ed Falco and in the first two films of the film adaptation. He is represented by Bruno Kirby, Jr. in The Godfather II, making Clemenza a young man, while in The Godfather he is represented by Richard S. Castellano.

Clemenza became a friend of Vito Corleone after emigrating from Sicily. It had its beginnings in the sale of stolen goods, such as pistols and became a key figure in the growing Corleone family. Vito kept him close over the years, even making him his Sonny's godfather, although this was to control his brutality and ambition.

Clemenza helped Vito to contact alcohol traffickers from Canada, and was rewarded with the Corleone family's degree of caporegime.

Clemenza helps Michael Corleone after the Vito bombing. During the murders of the heads of the five families Clemenza shoots Don Stracci and his bodyguard, and participates in the murder of Carlo Rizzi. Clemenza is the one that handles the soldiers Willi Cicci, Al Neri (although this happened to be directly controlled by Michael), Rocco Lampone (that substitutes Paulie Gatto), Frank Pentangeli, Carmine Rosato, Anthony Rosato, Joey Zasa and other four capodecines never named. In the beginnings of the family Corleone, according to the film The Godfather 2 Clemenza configures its regime counting on Hyman Roth in its rows, although in the future it separated of the family.

Peter Clemenza dies of a heart attack while telling anecdotes as he is making food for his men, (done in the sequel to the book written by Mark Winegardner).
