In the period of national socialism, the "Ahnengau" (also ancestral canton of the Fiihrer) was a name for the state of Lower Austria, which had been named "Niederdonau" since the Anschluss of Austria to the German Reich. The reason for this was that Adolf Hitler's parents Alois Hitler originally came from Döllersheim (today Pölla) and Klara Hitler from Spital in the Waldviertel. National socialists planted Hitler's oaks, and the municipality of Großpoppen was the first Austrian to admit Adolf Hitler's honorary citizen.

However, the inhabitants of Döllersheim and several other settlements were expelled from their homeland between 1938 and 1941, as the German army created a large field of military operations in the area (the still existing military training place Allentsteig).
