Y.

This page is about the Greek letter ipsilon. For other uses see Y (disambiguation)

Ipsilon (or ipsilon, according to the Greek pronunciation ὒψιλόν) (Υ υ) is the twentieth letter of the Greek alphabet. In ancient times the spelling ýpsilon was used, which has the drawback of using an accent on the letter y. In ancient Greek classical was pronounced [and], like the u in French or the ü in German. In modern Greek it is pronounced [i], except in some diphthongs in which it is pronounced like [f] (eg ελευθέρια, eleftheria) or [v] (eg εὐαγγέλιον evangelion). It is the origin of the letter y (Greek i), as well as the letters u, v, w of the Latin alphabet. Use
