After the GDR footballer SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt landed on a descent place under his coach Günter Horst on the 16th day of the season 1958, the 31-year-old Gerhard Hofmann, who had previously been unknown in high-class GDR football, took over in September 1958 the training of the Oberligamannschaft. He succeeded in leading the team to fourth place at the end of the season. In the following season he helped the SC Wismut to his second championship. In the Europapokal the Landesmeister 1958/59 managed the SC Wismut under Hofmann to the quarterfinale. In 1960, he was replaced by Manfred Fuchs after a 3-0 win over SC Fortschritt Weißenfels on the fourth day of the Oberligatabelle

Hofmann was not represented in the two highest football leagues of the GDR for seven years. In the meantime the GDR football had returned to the summer-spring-play enterprise and the players of the SC bismuth Karl-Marx-City had since 1963 as a business sport association (BSG) Wismut Aue. Wismut Aue fell back to the last Oberliga table position on the 9th day of the season 1967/68 after a 1: 2 home defeat against FC Vorwärts Berlin. The former coach Bringfried Müller was replaced by Gerhard Hofmann. Under his leadership, the BSG Bismut started with three victories in a row and fought a safe eleventh place until the end of the season. Also in the following three seasons, Aue managed to maintain the class and reached the best place in seventh place since 1970.

For the season 1971/72 Hofmann switched to the regional football-performance center and Oberligarivalen FC Karl-Marx-Stadt. After his relegation in 1970, he immediately returned to the league. Hofmann also helped the FCK to maintain the class, reaching safe midfield positions in 1972/73 and 1973/74. After the end of the first round of the 1974/75 season, Gerhard Hofmann left FC Karl-Marx-Stadt in ninth place and finished his career in high-class football.

He later worked as a sports instructor at the Technical University of Karl-Marx-Stadt. Edit source text Weblinks Edit sourcetext
