Intensity modulated radiation therapy

Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is a technique that, through the use of radiation beams of varying intensity, allows a very precise concentration of the dose in the cancerous tumor and reduce the dose in healthy tissues. It constitutes an evolution of the radiotherapy conformed in three dimensions.

IMRT technology optimizes the intensity of radiation through sophisticated computers to maximize the dose in the tumor and minimize the dose in normal tissues. This requires team collaboration between the oncology radiotherapist physician, radiophysicists or medical physicists, dosimetrists and radiotherapists or radiotherapy technicians.
