Daniel Jones (September 12, 1881 - December 4, 1967) was an English phonetist.
Pupil of Paul-Édouard Passy, professor of phonetics at the École des Hautes Études at the Sorbonne (Paris). Daniel Jones is considered by many to be the best phonetist of the early 20th century. In 1917 Jones became the first linguist to use the term phoneme (a family or group of acoustically or articulatorily related language sounds that never appear in the same phonic context) in its present sense, using it in the article " The phonetic structure of the Sechuana Language ". Jones also produced the first edition of the English Pronouncing Dictionary, which featured his famous diagram of cardinal vowels. Publications
