Geography
Located on a rugged and dry soil, next to the creek of the same name, on the grounds of the former pen-yard of Baire-Arriba. One of the most suitable places for growing tobacco. Population
It was the only population gathered in the party of Baire, which gives its name and serves as its head, with its Catholic parish church. By the middle of the 19th century there were 342 white individuals, 109 free of color and 3 slaves. History
In 1820 there were already plenty of housing groups of farmers and vegueros, so that as a result of a pastoral visit, the archbishop of Santiago de Cuba arranged to erect as a parish auxiliary a hermitage that was built there at the expense of some neighbors and aid of the mitar, under the invocation of San Bartolomé. It had a free school of first letters for males, paid for by the city council.
