Delta Volantis

Delta Volantis (δ Vol / HD 57623 / HR 2803) is, with apparent magnitude +3.98, the fourth brightest star of the Volans constellation - the flying fish - after β Volantis, γ Volantis and ζ Volantis. It is 738 light years from the Solar System.

Delta Volantis is a luminous giant of spectral type F6 II with an approximate surface temperature of 6000 K. It shines with a luminosity equal to the one of 2900 soles and, like other stars of its temperature, it presents / displays certain magnetic activity. It has a radius 50 times larger than solar radius and its projected rotation speed - lower limit of the actual value - is 12 km / s, resulting in a rotation period of up to 200 days - this figure being an upper limit - . In the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, it is located between Mirfak (α Persei) and Polaris (α Ursae Minoris) near the Cepheid region, although it does not show the characteristic pulsations of these variables. With an age of 50 million years, it has an approximate mass of 6 - 6.5 solar masses. Although it is difficult to realize its current evolutionary state, what can be assured is that it will end its life as a massive white dwarf of solar mass.
