The dream of Joseph

Joseph's dream is a painting by the Italian painter Daniele Crespi, made in the 1620s. It is located in the Museum of Art History in Vienna.

It depicts the biblical episode in which the angel warns Joseph about Herod's intentions of murdering Jesus as recorded in the Gospel of Matthew. In the main scene, Joseph sleeps with the tools of profession to his feet while the angel gives him the instructions to flee to Egypt, while at a very secondary level the manger is perceived with the child and the Virgin Mary.
