Juan Santamaría Cultural Historical Museum


The Juan Santamaría Cultural Historical Museum, also called Juan Santamaría Museum, is a museum located in the city of Alajuela, Costa Rica. It was created in 1974 and its main objective is the commemoration of the National Campaign of 1856-1857, important event of the history of Costa Rica, and takes the name of the national hero, Juan Santamaría, born in the city of Alajuela. It also preserves other works and documents of different themes related to the general history of Costa Rica, biographies, museography, museology, genealogies, works of art, numismatics, ample collections of books, documents, magazines and newspapers. The museum occupies the premises of the former Barracks of Arms, as well as the old Alajuela Prison, both buildings built in the 19th century and considered as patrimonial of the country by its neoclassical style architecture.
