Battle of La Estrelleta
The Battle of La Estrelleta was one of the great combats of the Dominican Republic after the declaration of National Independence. This battle, known as La Estrelleta, was fought on September 17, 1845 on the border of the Dominican Republic and Haiti, today the province of Elías Piña. In this battle, the country again saw the performance of the people and the armed forces, under the command of General Jose Joaquin Puello, putting the Dominican flag and the patriotic feelings of the people high up again.
General José Joaquín Puello and a section of the southern army, led by General Antonio Duvergé, convincingly defeated the troops of the neighboring country, Haiti, commanded by General Jean-Louis Pierrot , who sought to regroup to reincarnate the country, that is, to re-control the recent nation. General Puello had the support of Colonels Bernardino Pérez and Valentín Alcántara.
They tell stories that one of the Dominican fighters saw one of the enemy troops coming and taking the flagpole jump by cutting the enemy in 2.
