Tuomarila received classical piano lessons from the age 6 to 18 years. He first became enthusiastic about rock music before he discovered jazz in the paternal plate collection. In 1993, he began his studies at the Helsinki Conservatory, which he continued with Diederik Wissels and Nathalie Loriers from 1994 to 1999 at the Brussels Conservatory.
