Longino Soto Pacheco


Longino Soto Pacheco (born October 12, 1923, died October 13, 2010 in San José) was a Costa Rican physician, footballer and politician.

He completed his medical studies in 1947 as a surgeon at the Universidad Autónoma de México. He subsequently specialized in general surgery, cardiovascular and thoracic surgery in the USA. The founding member of the Escuela de Medicina of the Universidad de Costa Rica was on 8 March 1991 head of the medical team at the first heart transplant carried out in Costa Rica. In all, Soto Pacheco participated in 25 heart transplants in his medical career. The politically active Costa Rican was also president of the Federación Costarricense de Fútbol. Under his presidency, the national team of his home country was able to qualify for the first time for a football World Cup in 1990. Soto Pacheco died at the Hospital Clínica Católica at the age of 87 and was buried at Cementerio Montesacro in Curridabat.
