Single National Role

The National Unique Role, also known by the acronym RUN, is the unique and unrepeatable identification number possessed by all Chileans, whether or not resident in Chile, and any foreigner who temporarily or permanently stays with a visa other than the visa of tourist in that country.

The agency responsible for granting the RUN is the Civil Registry and Identification Service, which grants it to those born in Chile at the time of registration of their birth in the respective repertoires. In all other cases, the RUN is granted at the time of requesting the identity card, a document of compulsory attendance for those over 18 years of age. The RUN was, until September 2013, the Chilean passport number. At present it does not necessarily coincide.

The RUN is given in a sequential order, so it is very likely that a person with a lower RUN is older, since most RUNs come from birth inscriptions.

Legal entities - such as companies, international organizations, tax offices, NGOs, etc. - have a similar identification number, the Single Tax Unit (RUT), which is assigned by the Internal Revenue Service (SII) at his request. The RUN is also the Unique Tributary Role of natural persons.

The RUN and RUT consist of two parts separated by a dash: the correlative number and the check digit or DV. The DV consists of a digit from 0 (zero) to 9 (nine) or the letter K, which is obtained from the correlative by computing an algorithm. The DV validates the RUN or RUT, since this number can have a single check digit; thus avoiding typing errors and deceptions.

Normally, both RUN and RUT use separator points of thousands, so that they obey the following format: XX.XXX.XXX-Y, where X is a digit and Y is digit or the letter K.
