La Colonia neighborhood

It is known as The Colony to a neighborhood of public housing enabled in 1914 by the Municipality of Buenos Aires. It is located in the neighborhood of Parque Patricios, and very close to the park of the same name. History The history of the Municipal District Park of the Patricios (official name of "The Colony") dates back to 1909, when the Municipality of Buenos Aires acquired, with donations from the Jockey Club of Buenos Aires, a land of about one hectare of surface and shape of parallelogram near the Park of the Patricians inaugurated shortly before, in 1902. At that time the area chosen for the set of housing for municipal workers was a marginal place in Buenos Aires, where animals were previously farmed, and not very far away was the burning of rubbish.

The works were completed by 1914, when the City Hall inaugurated the 116 homes, distributed by the society of St. Vincent de Paul in a draw among the workers. These were mostly European immigrants: mostly Italians and Spaniards, and that is why with the passing of time popularly became the motto of "La Colonia" with which the neighborhood is still known.

The Vincentian ladies were responsible for the administration and collection of housing rent until 1954, when they were finally sold to their occupants through soft mortgage loans for a period of 30 years. Description

The small set of single-family homes is bordered by José Cortejarena, Diógenes Taborda, Andrés Ferreyra and Cachi streets. It is crossed by three north-south passages called Gena, Mocoretá and Guayquiraró, and one in the East-West direction called Miriñay; and in the center is the small Francisco López Torres Square.

The original design of the houses was simple: they had a small garden of entrance, and two floors with kitchen, dining room and two or three rooms. Throughout the hundred years of existence of the neighborhood, its original owners or their descendants and new owners were modifying the facades and interiors according to the tastes, successive fashions or structural needs.

Today, the rich grove that adorns the sidewalks and the square is already old, and is composed of species such as palm trees, araucarias, bananas, drunken sticks and willows.
