The Conqueror (song)

The Conqueror is a song recorded in 1969 and belongs to the concept album From Genesis to Revelation by the English progressive rock group Genesis that same year.

The song is integrated with the concept of the album, representing a despotic conqueror. He does "roll heads", and according to the lyrics of the song "the words of love are killing him". The essence of this theme (and part of the energy found in the piece, although increased tenfold) will be reincarnated with greater effect in the song The Knife of his upcoming album Trespass.

The only version that exists of "The Conqueror" is the one found in this album. In the original editions, it was the opening song of the second side (in LP and cassette), beginning with the piano notes of the previous theme In The Wilderness, that closed the first side. This process is used throughout the album to join separate songs in a continuous meta-song. "The Conqueror" features a rare electric guitar solo near the end of the song, making it the most rocky moment of the album (alongside the song In The Beginning). It can only be assumed that this piece was performed in the first concerts of the group, since there are no recorded records.
