A tauntaun (plural tauntaun) is a fictional creature of the film series Star Wars. The tauntaun appear in Episode V of the saga, episode titled in Castilian The Empire strikes back. The tauntaun were large bipedal beasts used as a mount by the rebels on the planet Hoth. They had a large ram's head, with four nostrils and a pair of curved horns, and a dense coat covering its body similar to that of a theropod. The natural predators of the tauntaun are the wampas.
Han Solo opened the intestinal package of a newly killed tauntaun with Luke Skywalker's lightsaber to put the young Jedi apprentice inside the beast. Thus, for the time needed to set up a shelter, Han Solo saved Skywalker's life by providing warmth in the midst of the snowstorm they faced on one of the Hoth Plains.
