Campo of Les Milles

The camp of Les Milles (French Camp des Milles) was a concentration camp located in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône, opened in September 1939 in the building of an old tile factory. >

In principle, it served as an internment camp for German residents in France, which was shared by genuine Nazi and German exiles, many of them Jews. Among the inmates, until 1940 were well known artists such as Max Ernst, Lion Feuchtwanger, Hans Bellmer, Robert Liebknecht, Ferdinand Springer and Wolls.

Afterwards, the Vichy government used the camp to intern the Jews before handing them over to the Nazi authorities. In August 1942 children were deported from this camp.
