The male part (above) has a groove which allows it to be held in place by the springs of the female part (below), all clicking when the snap is closed.

A snap fastener is a closure device instead of a button and consists of two metal elements, one of which engages in the other by pressure. It was invented in Grenoble for the glove in 1886, by Albert-Pierre Raymond and patented under the name of "button-clasp with spring". Riveted, it keeps the appearance of a traditional button externally but is more practical than the button and the buttonhole. Notes &
