Great Synagogue (Gibraltar)


The Great Synagogue of Gibraltar, also known as Kahal Kadosh Shaar Hashamayim (Hebrew: קהל קדוש שער השמיים), is located in the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar, and is the oldest synagogue in the Iberian Peninsula still in use. It was founded in 1724 by Isaac Nieto of London. After having been rebuilt several times, the current building dates back to 1812 and shares common features with the Portuguese synagogue of Amsterdam - 1675 and the London synagogue, Bevis Marks Synagogue -1701.
