The United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is a Cabinet of the United States government with the goal of protecting the health of all Americans and the provision essential social services. Its motto is "Enhance the health, safety and well-being of America."

The department was created when President Jimmy Carter signed the Department of Education's Organic Law (PL 96-88) into law on October 17, 1979. The Department of Health, Education and Welfare is divided (HEW ), which includes the Social Security Administration, the agencies that make up the Public Health Service, the Family Support Administration, and the Office of Education in the Department of Health and Social Services. (In 1995, the Social Security Administration has withdrawn from the Department of Health and Social Services and established it as an independent body of the executive branch of the United States Government.)
