Térraba (indigenous territory)


The Térraba Indigenous Territory is a Costa Rican indigenous community recognized by the State and the only indigenous territory of the Teribe ethnic group. It was designated as an Indigenous Reserve of Boruca-Térraba on November 15, 1956 by executive decree No. 34, then its territory expanded and delimited more widely by executive decree in 1993. In the community there are 1,267 indigenous and 817 indigenous peoples. Currently the Spanish language is used for common use, but about 9% of the population still speaks teribe. The community reestablished the Council of Elders, a traditional organization of political organization and recognized by the State through the National Directorate of Community Development Associations, it coexists with the Development Association and there is an internal polemic in the community about the legitimacy of the one or the other.
