Semasiology

Semasiology is a branch of lexicology or vocabulary that studies the relationship that goes from the word to the object; in the dialogue this function is fulfilled by the receiver, who receives the word from the sender and attributes the corresponding meaning. That is, the receiver acquires a substance of elements emitted by someone and mentally gives it meaning. It can be understood as the inverse path of onomasiology.

This concept is often used as a synonym for semantics, that is, as the study of the meaning of words. In the DRAE as a first meaning we refer to "semantics" defining it as: Study of the meaning of linguistic signs and their combinations, from a synchronic or diachronic point of view.
