The ballad of the waterwheel is a well-known ballad of the poet Bertolt Brecht. It was originally published in Brecht's Die Rundköpfe and the Spitzköpfe (versions 1932/33 and 1938 respectively). The poem contains a social-critical text. It is about the high lords of the world, among whom the little people who feed them are suffering. In the play, it is sung by the figure of Nanna Callas, a prostitute. The waterwheel stands for Albrecht Schöne for the fortune wheel of Fortuna. Apart from a first version Brecht published in Hundred Poems (1951) a version entitled "Lied vom Wasserrad". The music is from Hanns Eisler. Single-level Edit source text
