Mountain forests of the Eastern Royal Cordillera

The montane forests of the Eastern Royal Cordillera (WWF name) are an ecoregion of montane forest and Andean forest of the Neotropical ecozone that extends along the eastern flank of the northern Andes. It is the Upper Amazon of Ecuador and extends from the south of Colombia to the north of Peru.

For its latitude make up the Equatorial Mountain Jungle, also called Mountain Eyebrow. It is a strip of great biodiversity located between the equatorial Andes and the Amazon plain.

In Ecuador, it is often called the Humid Forest of the High Amazon and represents the region with the highest endemism per area of the country. Several scientists consider that the high Amazon of southern Ecuador contains the greatest floristic richness of any area of similar size in the Neotropics (Schulenberg and Aybrey, 1997). The Podocarpus National Park stands out in the south east of Ecuador.

In Peru, it crosses the Andes, reaching the Pacific slope, stretching from the Andean forest of Piura, passing through the north of Cajamarca to the high jungle of Amazonas border, where the Cordillera del Cóndor stands out. >
