Runa Laila was born on November 17, 1952 in Sylhet city of East Bengal when the name of that area was East Pakistan (which went into Bangladesh in 1971 and became Bangladesh). Their middle class father was from the monarchy city. When he was a young girl, the master of a music used to teach music to his elder sister Dinah Laila. Runa was small but noticed - he easily learned music. Runa Laila's real interest was with dance and she got training in Kathak, Bharatnatyam and Kathakali. His early music education took place in Karachi where his family had settled in the 1960s. His master was Ustad Kasim, later known as 'Piya Rang'. Like other Bengali families, Runa Laila's family also had an emphasis on art.
Runa Laila also has a younger brother, whose name is Syed Ali Murad. Runa has been married four times and she has a daughter named Tanai Laila. His first marriage came from Khwaja Javed Kaiser, the second from Maidul Islam, the third from a Switzerland-resident of Dan Dunedand and the fourth and last marriage to famous Bangladeshi actor Alamgir. Singing
Roena Laila's first performance of the singing happened with Ittefaq when her elder sister, Dina, had received an invitation to sing on stage, but her stomach throat became worse. Runa was so small that Tanapura did not stand up and grabbed him and licked him in his lap, he got a keen attention. He started appearing on 'The Xia Mohiuddin Show' on Karachi's television and gradually entered into his Pakistani film world.
When Runa was 12, music director Manzoor Hussain chose him to sing in the Pakistani film 'Jugnu'. The influence of Manzoor Sahib is that Runa Laila still believes that she forced Runa to work hard and go further. Just saying this, Runa's voice is good, she forced Runa to work on her holes. In those days, this technological facility was not available to correct the mistakes of the singer and later mixed with the music through the computer. Sara Orkestra Iqta used to record with the singer and if there was any mistake, then all had to start again from the beginning. He took inspiration from the famous Pakistani playback singer Ahmed Rashdi and later he got involved in several songs. In the decade of 1970s, he sang in many Pakistani film Nagma 'Umrao Jaan Pada', created in 1972, was a film which was very much followed by all the songs left by Runa Laila.
His sister Dina, who was once married to Pakistani leader Maqdum Amin Fahim, wanted to enter the singing but when she got married she gave up this dream. Afterwards he died from his cancer. In the memory of Runa Laila, she organized six concerts in Bangladesh, from which she got a cancer ward in a children's hospital in the Capital of Bangladesh, Dhaka.
Bangladesh became independent in 1971 and in 1974, they did singing in the Hindustani film Ek Ek Banekar Ek, whose song 'Damad Mast Khelander' became a super hit in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. He also sang many songs of the 1977 film 'Gharonda', which he liked. After this, he stopped singing in Hindi films but he is still liked in India.
