Orlan

An Orlan costume.

Orlan is the name of a Soviet Union (now Russian) space suit model used for extravehicular activities at the Salyut, MIR and International Space Station stations. It was designed by the company NPP Zvezdá and is derived from the Krechet suit, designed to be used on the lunar surface.

It consists of flexible ends attached to a rigid one-piece central body, with a helmet included. The suit opens at the back so the astronaut can get into it. In the entrance hatch he carries a backpack with the life support team.

There have been several versions of the Orlan costumes. The Orlan-D version had an autonomy of only three hours and was released on the Salyut 6 mission. The Orlan-D version increased the autonomy period to nine hours.

The pressure inside the suit is 0.4 atmospheres, requiring a pre-breathing period of 30 minutes. It obtains the electric energy of a cord between the suit and the station and the control of the systems is done through a panel in the chest.
