Isabel from Anjou

For other uses of this term, see Isabel de Anjou (disambiguation).

Elizabeth of Anjou, also known as Matilde of Anjou and Alicia (1101-1154), married in June 1119 with Guillermo Adelin, the first-born son of Henry I of England. She was the daughter of Count Fulco V of Anjou and his first wife, Ermengarda of Maine.

On 25 November 1120, William and Elizabeth embarked on a journey from Anjou to England. A considerable number of nobles and courtiers departed on two or more ships, one of which was called the White Ship. When crossing the Channel the White Ship was shipwrecked and all those who were in it died. Guillermo was in that boat, but Matilda was not. After widowing he did not remarry. She became a nun in the Abbey of Fontevrault, where she became an abbess and where her tomb is located.
