Angel (coin)

Angel of the reign of Henry VIII of England. An angel is a gold coin, used for the first time in France (where it was also known as angelot and ange) in 1340, and introduced in England by Edward IV in 1465 as a new type of "noble" and called it at first the "noble angel". It varied in value between that period and the reign of Charles I, when it was last minted (1642), from 6 shillings and 8 pence to 11 shillings. Its name derives from the representation that it had of San Miguel and the dragon.
