In 1992, Sompol Kukasemkij started at the Olympics in Herreneinzel. There he won his first match against Anders Nielsen, but lost in the second round against Alan Budikusuma. In 1990, he already won the Thailand Open in his homeland. In 1985, he finished the World Cup in the Round of 16 against Prakash Padukone. Two years earlier he was the winner at the Swiss Open.
