Plasmid R

A plasmid R is a resistance plasmid containing the bacteria. It confers resistance to antibiotics and toxins.

An R plasmid can have as many as 10 genes that confer resistance and can be transferred by conjugation to other bacteria of the same species, different species and even viruses. Some bacteria have been found in symbiosis with plants (which are eukaryotic organisms) or parasitizing them, and were observed to be injected with their genome or some plasmid.

Plasmid R has also been used in genetic engineering to create plants resistant to some toxics or diseases, and to make them produce substances that are not attacked by insects.
