Great St. Petersburg Choral Synagogue


The Great St. Petersburg Choral Synagogue (Russian: Санкт-Петербургская Большая Хоральная Синагога) Sometimes called the St. Petersburg synagogue, it is the second largest synagogue in Europe. It was built between 1880 and 1888, and consecrated in 1893.

The St. Petersburg synagogue could be built only after obtaining a building permit on September 1, 1869 when Czar Alexander II, reduced restrictions on the residence of Jews in St. Petersburg.
