For other uses of this term, see Memoirs of a Madman. Poprischin represented by the Russian painter Iliá Repin, 1882.

Diary of a madman, also known as Memoirs of a madman or Notes of a madman (in Russian Записки сумасшедшего) is a tale by the writer Nikolai Gogol that tells the story of a bureaucrat who writes in his diary what happens to him. Little by little he is recounting his descent into madness. First you see little things like dates that do not match, then dogs talking and sending correspondence, and their comments throughout history are becoming rarer until you lose your sanity completely.
