Sérgio Cabral Filho

Sérgio de Oliveira Cabral Santos Filho arrested since 2016 (Rio de Janeiro, January 27, 1963) is a PMDB politician and Brazilian journalist. He was governor of Rio de Janeiro from 2007 to 2014.

Son of the journalist Sérgio Cabral, he was a state deputy in his state from 1991 to 2002, being also president of the State's Legislative Assembly from 1995. He was also candidate for mayor of Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and 1996. He presented himself to the gubernatorial elections of 2006 in the state of Rio de Janeiro obtaining 41.41% of the votes in the first round. It faced the 29 of October of the 2006 in the second return before Denise Frossard to which it defeated with 68% of the votes. In his first remarks upon taking office, he promised a tough hand against the wave of violence unleashed in the state before his election.

In 2010 he was re-elected without the need for a second round, with 66.08% of the votes cast. His closest rival, Gabeira of the Green Party stayed only with 20.68%.
