Polentone

The term polentone is a derogatory expression referring to the inhabitants of northern Italy.

Literally means polenta eater, a food historically widespread in the poor kitchen of northern Italy. Until the beginning of the 20th century, polenta represented the basic but not exclusive food of the populations of Lombardy and Veneto with harmful repercussions on the health of many people, victims of pellagra.

The equivalent for the regions of southern Italy would be terrone.
