Juan Ugart


Juan Ugart Fernández (October 18, 1913, Villanueva de Córdoba - September 5, 1938), Spanish poet. Biography

From humble origins (his parents were day laborers), he studied Magisterium at the Normal School of Teachers of Córdoba and when he won the oppositions he obtained a place in one of the nursery schools of La Ribera. In 1935 he published his first poems in the Sevillian magazine Hojas de poesía. He participates with Juan Bernier, Enrique Moreno, José María Alvariño and other creators, artists and intellectuals of the Córdoba of those years in gatherings and cultural activities. In the autumn of this same year the present presents of April, the only poemario published by Juan Ugart whose literary value already enjoys the recognition of the cultural environment of Cordova.

In 1936 he collaborates in the republican newspaper La Voz with literary criticism and gives lectures. In March of this same year the poetic group Ardor was formed, led by Juan Ugart with Ortiz Villatoro, Enrique Moreno and others, that in many aspects is seen like predecessor of the Canticle Group. The magazine Ardor, subtitled Revista de Córdoba will only publish its first issue.

From Falangist ideology, Juan Ugart fights in the Francoist army against the Republicans and on September 5, 1938 he dies in the Battle of the Ebro at the age of 25. Work Sources
