Juan de las Cabezas Altamirano


Juan de las Cabezas Altamirano y de la Calzada (* Zamora, 1565 - † Guatemala, 1615), Spanish Dominican friar who held high ecclesiastical positions in the Viceroyalty of New Spain. He exercised episcopal dignity in different Indian dioceses such as Santiago de Cuba and Guatemala. Biography

His parents were Juan de las Cabezas Altamirano and Ana de la Calzada. He studied at the San Esteban Convent in Salamanca. Once made his religious profession (1581) happened to Santo Domingo (1582). There he received as a teacher of Theology and was elected even provincial. In this condition, he participated in the general chapter of his order, held in Madrid (1590).

Preached to practice the bishopric of Santiago de Cuba (1602), after moving and taking possession began the visit of his diocese. In the course of it, he was captured by pirates in the town of Báyamo and after 80 days of captivity was demoted by 2,000 ducats (1609).

Promoted to the diocese of Guatemala (1610), he entered it the following year and remained there until his death, without having received the documentation that appointed him as bishop of Arequipa (1615), in the Viceroyalty of Peru. / p>
