Jews of Belmonte

Belmonte Jews are a community of Jews who have been kept secret for hundreds of years by marriages between their members and keeping their faith in secret. The Jewish community of Belmonte, Portugal, originated in the twelfth century, its members being secret until the twentieth century, when they were betrayed by a Captain Askenazí of the Portuguese navy. The Sephardic culture of this group is unique.

The first contacts with other Jews took place a few decades ago, declaring themselves as Orthodox Jews, although maintaining ancient traditions.
