Hippolyte Mège-Mouriès


Mège-Mouriès Hippolyte Mège-Mouriès (born 24 October 1817 in Draguignan, 31 May 1880 in Paris) was a French chemist and inventor of margarine. On behalf of the French government under Napoleon III. as a substitute for butter, he developed a spreadable fat, which was intended to feed the military in a cost-effective manner. In 1871, Mège-Mouriès sold its invention to the Dutch company Jurgens, which later emerged in the Unilever.
